Letting Go…

Why is it so difficult to let go?

Letting go of loved ones, material things, expectations, habits, ideas, grudges, addictions, friendships…self inflicting doubts, anxieties, insecurities…

A number of things shape who we are as a person, and letting go means we’d have to open the doors to the unknown. We would be forced to travel down life’s path without our blanket, our comfort.

If you’ve lost a loved one, you know the pain can feel unbearable. Losing your home to a natural disaster can feel heartbreaking. Releasing relationships, friendships or lovers who no longer serve our greater good, can be confusing, but also empowering. Watching our children fly the nest can leave a lump inside our throats and a pit in our stomachs so big that we think we can’t possibly carry on.

As I’ve matured, letting go has become easier. Letting go of perfection, ideas of how I think things are supposed to be, grudges & insecurities. Perhaps it is hindsight? Most likely it is the memories of only good things that sustain my ideal.

My memories have provided insights into my storytelling, minus my short-film, HONEY which was written to focus on strong female characters and the inherent loneliness in their lives. The characters in HONEY are angry, judgemental, and each is searching for …something. If I am honest, perhaps some parts of myself appear in the characters Frankie, April, and HONEY. In the end, it is a universal love story of acceptance.

As a writer and screenwriter, the stories I’ve shared have deep personal attachments. I think The Dead Driver is the most personal so far, so letting go and moving on is bittersweet, no doubt. However, I’m looking forward to my future as a filmmaker and my feature film, Secrets on Bonnabel. I didn’t think I’d be able to write such a lengthy story, so that in and of itself feels like a huge accomplishment. I haven’t shared much about the project in the last several months and that’s only because my focus was on the ending of The Dead Driver

During the past several months, I have worked daily, weekly–countless hours on Secrets on Bonnabel, a YA, Hispanic-led Thriller.  Stay tuned!
